Clock shows new face to the people

The Old Geelong Post Office clock on Ryrie Street was back in service last week following a $36,000 facelift.
Ward councillor Barbara Abley said it took workers less than a month to restore the 98-year-old clock to its former glory.
Cr Abley said that as part of the “routine” restoration process the iconic structure was cleaned, repainted and repaired.
She said the broken glass clock face was also replaced with “flexible” opalite acrylic sheets.
“It looks absolutely fantastic,” Cr Abley said. “Although it’s been maintained over the years, the materials used haven’t always matched the clock’s original materials so it looked somewhat patchy, particularly at night.”
She said the heritage-listed landmark was now “stronger than ever and looking its best day and night”.
“Drivers travelling down Aberdeen Street into the city centre will now be able to read the dial,” Cr Abley said.
“It was pretty expensive to restore, but they did an amazing job — we were very impressed.”
