War veterans will be honoured with Barwon Heads memorial

BARWON HEADS war veterans will be honoured with a memorial at the town’s RSL.
The black marble war memorial will be added to an existing remembrance plaque at the branch’s RSL hall, including the names of 67 local men who served during World War I and 34 men during World War II.
Barwon Heads RSL sub-branch president Ken Fulton said the war memorial was an important way to remember, honour and preserve the memory of those who did not return home from war.
“The memorial commemorates those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their king and country,” he said.
“It’ll provide people with a place to grieve for those who did not return and a place they can honour their memory quietly, peacefully and in dignity.”
Mr Fulton said the war memorial would be particularly important for future generations.
A $3600 Federal Government Saluting Their Service grant will go towards the war memorial, with the Barwon Heads RSL sub-branch pitching in the remaining $250.
But Mr Fulton was doubtful the war memorial would be ready for Anzac Day commemorations on April 25.
Mr Fulton called on the City of Greater Geelong to seal the laneway that leads to the sub branch’s home to preserve the war memorial.
Ward councillor Andy Richards said Memorial Lane was not a public road and was privately owned.
“Memorial Lane provides access to the RSL clubrooms and serves as rear access to residential properties in Grove Road and some in Hitchcock Avenue,” he said.
Cr Richards said all affected property owners had been contacted, and the council was seeking their feedback about the future of the laneway.
