Strange bedfellows in a cultural fusion at Star Search

Guest artists are planning a fusion of indigenous and western cultures at the region’s premier annual talent quest next week.
Narana Creations didgeridoo exponent Norm Stanley will join clarinet expert and former Star Search award winner Abby Hunt on stage, potentially for a song featuring both instruments.
Mr Stanley admitted the didgeridoo and clarinet were strange musical bedfellows.
“Abby has a tune in mind. We’ll rehearse this week and see how it fits together,” Mr Stanley said.
Twenty-four of the region’s brightest young musical talents will perform in vocal and instrumental categories at Star Search next week.
Previous winners, such as pop star Missy Higgins and international opera performer Cheryl Barker, have used the event as a stepping stone to successful careers in music.
Rotary Club of Highton’s 33rd Star Search will raise money for Geelong’s new Anam Cara House, which provides respite services for carers of the terminally ill. The house will also eventually offer hospice care.
Organisers have urged family and friends to attend Star Search so they can cheer on their favourite performers.
Star Search finalists will take to the stage of Geelong’s waterfront Costa Hall next Friday night.
Tickets cost $20 or $15 for concession-card holders from Anam Cara House, 142 Myers Street, Geelong, or from the city’s performing arts centre, fronting Ryrie and Little Malop streets.
