Explosion in North Geelong

An explosion in North Geelong involving gas bottles was brought under control by Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) at 5.24pm today.

FRV said the explosion was caused by gas bottles at Thompson Road, North Geelong.

Thompson Road between Separation Street and Victor Street, Armstrong Street and Pashley Avenue was closed.

FRV was called at 3.28pm, after calls to Triple Zero (000) reported a car fire with further callers reporting explosions and plumes of smoke billowing into the air, FRV said.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes to find a vehicle on the back of a truck on fire with flames spreading to nearby gas bottles causing multiple explosions.

Crews remain on the scene to ensure the safety of the area.

Vic Emergency issued a warning for the area.

“Smoke from an industrial fire in North Geelong is in parts of North Geelong, Bell Park, Bell Post Hill and surrounding suburbs,” it said.

“The smoke may aggravate existing heart and lung conditions and cause irritated eyes, coughing and wheezing.”
