Free recycling for farmers

Surf Coast Shire farmers can now recycle single-use plastic bags for free at the Winchelsea Transfer Station.

The bagMUSTER program officially launched at the transfer station for farmers and agricultural businesses to recycle eligible bags from fertilisers, seeds, stock feed and pet food.

Surf Coast Shire councillor Tony Phelps said the program provided a free and responsible recycling option for agricultural plastic that would otherwise go to landfill.

Mr Phelps said the introduction of bagMUSTER at the transfer station was a positive step for the shire’s farming community and environment.

“This program is free for eligible bags, is practical and delivers real environmental benefits,” he said.

“Single-use polypropylene bags are a necessary part of farming, but they don’t need to end up in landfill.

“By bringing bagMUSTER to Winchelsea, we are making it easier for farmers and agricultural businesses to recycle responsibly and keep plastic out of the environment.”

BagMUSTER is a national industry-led not-for-profit program dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of eligible bags used in Australian agriculture.

The drop-off service is only available at the Winchelsea Transfer Station, and all bags must be empty, clean and dry to be accepted for recycling.

All bags collected by bagMUSTER are recycled within Australia and repurposed into new products.

Fees will apply for the disposal of bags that are not eligible through the program, and people can visit surfcoast.vic.gov.au/bagMUSTER for more information.
