Fires continue to burn

Fires continue to burn in Golden Plains Shire, but the situation has eased.

An advice warning to remain informed is still in place for the Bamganie Meredith area as fire crews continue to work on containment lines.

With 69 vehicles responding to the fire on Saturday, VicEmergency issued a take shelter warning for people in Bamganie and nearby, stating they were in danger and needed to act immediately to survive.

Barwon Heads Fire Brigade sent a team to the fires to help with containment.

“The rest period was short-lived but we are grateful for the break,” it said on social media on Sunday.

“Trucks cleaned, restocked, refueled and firefighter bellies full.

“We’ve just sent another strike team off to the Mount Mercer fire. We wish Tim and Glenn all the best for their first strike team experience with the support of seasoned firefighters.”

Meanwhile poor air quality due to the surrounding fires will continue to Geelong and the Bellarine. There is no immediate threat and action is not required.

Fires continue to burn in the Otways region with Birrregurra Forest residents told to stay informed.

A grass fire broke out at Avalon Road at about 2.30pm on Saturday and was attended by 15 vehicles.

VicEmergency initially released an emergency warning for people in Avalon, Corio and Lara to shelter indoors while emergency services dealt with the blaze.

However, at 3.46pm an update was released saying the threat had been reduced and people were free to resume normal activities.

Visit emergency.vic.gov.au/respond or free call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226 to stay up to date with fires across the region.

Other sources to stay informed are VicEmergency app, Facebook or Twitter (#vicfires) or tune in to ABC Local Radio, commercial and designated community radio stations, or Sky News TV.
