Highton roundabout upgrade

The roundabout at Highton’s Mt Pleasant Road and North Valley Road is about to undergo a safety upgrade to install raised pedestrian crossings on all four approaches.

The raised crossings, which are funded through the federal government’s Black Spot Program, are hoped to improve pedestrian access and connectivity, improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists, slow vehicle speeds and increase driver awareness.

The project received $495,000 from the government.

As part of the works, the speed limit will be reduced to 50km/h to further improve safety and reduce crash risk.

Construction is scheduled to begin on 13 January and is expected to be finished by the end of February.

Traffic management and signage will be in place to assist road users.

Black Spot projects aim to reduce serious injuries and fatalities at locations with a history of accidents.

City of Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said improving safety for road users and pedestrians remains a key focus for council.

“Improving safety at busy intersections like this one is important for our community and always a council priority,” he said.

“This upgrade will make it easier and safer for people to move around Highton, whether they’re walking, driving or cycling.”

Deputy mayor and Barrabool Hills Ward councillor Ron Nelson acknowledged the temporary inconvenience caused by the works.

“We know roadworks are inconvenient, so we really want to thank the Highton community and surrounding neighbourhoods for their understanding and patience,” he said.

“We suggest allowing extra travel time or considering different routes while we deliver this essential upgrade.”
