Portarlington’s main beach is now easier than ever to enjoy for everyone, as the popular swimming destination continues to become more inclusive and accessible.
People with disability or reduced mobility now have access to two new beach wheelchairs through a free online booking service or at the beach’s new Changing Places facility.
The wheelchairs, launched this week by coastal land management organisation Bellarine Bayside, move easily over different terrain types including soft sand, soil and grass, with wide tyres to absorb shock and provide a comfortable ride over uneven surfaces.
The Sandpaper All Terrain chair can navigate sand and the water’s edge, while the Mobi-Chair is able to float in waist-high water.
Jointly funded by Bellarine Bayside and the Victorian government’s Coastal Public Access and Risk grants program, the wheelchairs are part of the Portarlington Inclusive Beach project.
The project has already delivered the Changing Places facility and will also see the beach’s car parks, paths and infrastructure redesigned.
Bellarine Bayside chief executive Scott Crabtree said he was thrilled to launch the new beach wheelchairs.
“Community feedback has played a vital role in this project; we’ve had many enquiries over the years about accessible facilities, and these investments will break down barriers so more people can enjoy the beach,” he said.
“Bellarine Bayside is committed to creating inclusive spaces along our coast, and I’m excited about the further upgrades planned for 2026.”
Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said the Inclusive Beach project’s outcomes were “meaningful steps towards creating inclusive communities on the Bellarine Peninsula”.
