Plans to create 2000 jobs in Geelong were under a cloud yesterday after the boss of an IT giant admitted to falsifying accounts in a scandal dubbed “India’s Enron”.

A spokesperson said State Government was seeking urgent talks with Indian company Satyam about the future of its proposed

computer complex at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus.

A $4 billion township planned for Moolap faces its first serious obstacle as environmentalists target the former saltworks site for a wetlands conservation reserve to protect migratory birds.

Geelong Environment Council (GEC) and Queenscliff Environment Forum want legislative safeguards for 18 wetlands across the Bellarine Peninsula, including the Cheetham salt fields and Point Henry.

Another block of the controversial Green Spine project was officially completed this week, just in time for the Christmas retail rush.

Victorian minister for regional development Gayle Tierney announced on Monday block three of the Green Spine – the section of Malop Street between Yarra and Bellerine Streets – had been completed after nearly six months of major works.
