Matt Aidt earned himself a near-perfect ATAR score, but believes he wouldn’t have achieved his goals without the support of the school’s community.

Matt was named Geelong High School (GHS) dux this week after receiving an ATAR of 99.8, including scores of 47 for Chemistry and English, 46 for Physics, 42 for Math Methods, 41 for Specialist Math and an equivalent of 45 for a tertiary physics subject through the University of Melbourne.

He said the support of the school’s teachers, staff and students, as well as his family, was instrumental in his achievement.

“I was lucky enough not to get any pressure from my family, no pressure from my teachers,” Matt said.

“I didn’t feel like I had to score high, and I think having that relaxation through year 12 was really important.

“I knew if I ever burnt out, which I was fortunate enough not to do, I had people there for me. Knowing that when you’re stressed, there’s always people around to help…Geelong High was a terrific community and I feel like they always had my back.”

Matt has already begun studying ahead of the Bachelor of Science, majoring in physics, that he will undertake next year.

“I want to do something between quantum and medicine; I want to look into sporadic cancers and perhaps figure out a way to fight or beat cancer. That’s something I’m very passionate about.

“I want to transform the elegance of physics and maths into something practical, something with real-world results and impact.”
