Centre’s international success

A Geelong service that provides international students with practical help and a sense of belonging has won a Victorian International Education Award.

The Lounge International Student Centre received the Excellence in International Student Experience award for its impact and contribution to the state’s international education sector.

Program manager Helen Nicholls-Stary said the centre united students from different backgrounds and cultures under one roof in Geelong.

“Being an international student is an amazing experience, benefiting both the student and the community; however, it is not without its challenges,” she said.

“For some students, it is their first time being away from their family and friends, while international students are trying to understand a new culture in a country far from home.

“This award recognises the dedication and the high level of support that the team have provided to make such a meaningful difference for the international students in Geelong.

“Making connections with support services and establishing a friendship network are essential elements to successfully achieving desired study goals and enjoying their experience in Geelong.”

The Lounge International Student Centre is backed by the Salvation Army, and Major David Elderidge AM said the organisation was proud to support the centre.

“Salvation Army and the centre share a commitment to inclusive practice that recognises and values diversity, alongside our shared values of compassion, integrity, respect, and collaboration,” he said.

“International students will be able to link in with other Salvation Army services as additional supports for international students, including counselling and support for students experiencing financial stress.”

The Lounge International student ambassador, Vishrut Goswami, who lives in Geelong, was also the winner of the International Student of the Year – Regional award.
