Army veteran and Back to Basics candidate Eric Menogue has been elected to fill a vacancy on Surf Coast Shire Council.
The Torquay father of three was named the successful candidate for the Torquay Ward councillor position following a countback held by the Victorian Electoral Commission yesterday (28 October).
The position was left open after Rebecca Bourke decided to vacate her position last month, with Mr Menogue having until 10am tomorrow to formally accept the position.
Mayor Mike Bodsworth said he congratulated Mr Menogue on his successful candidacy during the October council meeting last night.
“I understand that the VEC is still going through their processes, and a formal outcome will be communicated in due course,” he said.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Rebecca for her contribution to council during her time with us.”
Mr Menogue was part of the Surf Coast Back to Basics Team during the council election last year, which aimed to put people on council who would advocate for council to prioritise roads, rates and rubbish.
He will join councillors Liz Pattison and fellow Back to Basics advocate Paul Barker in representing the Torquay Ward following his acceptance of the position.
