Wild winds ruin Cup

Strong winds caused havoc at the Geelong Cup on Wednesday with the nine-race meeting abandoned after three races.

Punters were evacuated from all marquees at Geelong Racing Club and racing was halted at 2.15pm and eventually postponed altogether about 3pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology reported winds of about 50km/h at 3pm with gusts reaching more than 80km/h.

Disappointed racegoers were seen leaving the course just after the announcement.

Haaland won the first race of the meeting with Normandy Lass taking out Race 2 and Astral Flame Race 3.

On Wednesday morning, Geelong Racing Club announced the meeting would go ahead despite predictions of strong winds and early rainfall.

All trackside umbrellas were removed as a safety precaution and a relocation plan was ready to be enacted.

RV Head of Racing Paul Bloodworth confirmed the remaining races on the card will shift to Thursday.

The first race – Race 4 on the original program – will be run at 2.25pm, with the final of six events to be run at 5.30pm.
