Woman charged and girl stable during busy weekend

A woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing a vehicle connected to an attempted carjacking at a Norlane hardware store carpark.

An allegedly stolen grey Haval was seen at South Melbourne’s Dorcas and Moray Streets at about 1.15pm on 17 October by officers conducting patrols for a suspicious loiter before the vehicle drove off.

Officers began tracking the vehicle, which was occupied by a 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman both from Abbotsford, along the Princes Freeway towards Norlane.

The vehicle allegedly drove into Bunnings Geelong North car park before it nearly collided with a woman getting a pram out of her car.

The man got out of the Haval and allegedly attempted to carjack four separate vehicles, with police arriving at the scene and taking the man into custody about 2.45pm.

Police chased the woman into the hardware store, where she was arrested to be later interviewed by police and charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a drug of dependence.

She was bailed to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 18 November, while the man was taken to hospital under police guard.

It is alleged that the Haval was stolen from the Port Melbourne area on 6 October.

Anyone who witnessed the incident and has CCTV/dash cam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au to submit a report.

Emergency services also had their hands full during the Royal Geelong Show on 19 October after a gas bottle reportedly caught fire at about 1.20pm at Lions Club of Geelong’s food stand.

Emergency crews extinguished and took control of the fire, with a primary school-aged girl treated for smoke inhalation before being taken to University Hospital Geelong in a stable condition.
