Construction is poised to start on the new pavilion at Geelong’s premier athletics venue.
Works on the new John Landy Athletics Field two-storey pavilion will soon begin, replacing the original, outdated facility, which has not been updated since its construction in 1979.
Member for Geelong Christine Couzens announced the site’s readiness last week, welcoming the new, modern building.
“The pavilion’s state of the art facilities will be the catalyst for growth in regional athletics and sport and provide a fit-for-use space for local sporting clubs, schools, and communities,” she said.
Scheduled to be up and running in late 2026, the new pavilion will complete Landy Field’s upgrades, which include a new World Athletics Class 2 accredited surface that was completed in December last year.
The pavilion is being co-funded by the state government and City of Greater Geelong, each contributing $5 million to the project.
The government’s contribution is part of its Council Support Package, which exists to help local governments deliver projects that enhance community spaces and attract tourism and visitors.
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the council welcomed the Victorian government’s investment in the upgrade.
“We have a bold vision for John Landy Athletics Field to be a major player in the track and field arena and we were proud to lead the way with the $1.5 million council-funded track upgrade,” Mayor Kontelj.
“The new pavilion builds on this momentum. To be a true regional home for athletics we need facilities that match the quality of our athletes, and this two-storey build will do exactly that.
“It means jobs for local workers now, and the ability to attract major carnivals, and the stars of tomorrow, (for) years to come.”
