Agreement boosts India opportunities

Geelong council has cemented an agreement to collaborate with Australia’s leading body promoting the nation’s trade and investment relationship with India.

The City of Greater Geelong (CoGG) and the Australia India Business Council (AIBC) released a joint statement on Friday, August 29 announcing the signing of a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two organisations.

The agreement outlines a collaborative framework through which the two organisations aim to open up opportunities for economic growth and business engagement.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, which followed the City’s first Geelong-India Business Roundtable in June.

“Geelong is Australia’s fastest-growing city, and our future lies in building strong global connections,” he said.

“This MOU with AIBC is a powerful step toward unlocking new trade and investment opportunities with India, one of the world’s most dynamic economies.

“We are proud to champion Geelong’s businesses on the international stage.”

The MOU outlines a range of joint initiatives, including information exchange, joint activities such as a Geelong India Business Forum in 2026, identifying trade opportunities between Geelong and Indian businesses, connecting trade and industry experts in the two regions and showcasing Geelong in India through trade and business events.

AIBC national chair Deepak-Raj Gupta said the partnership reflected a shared commitment to deepening Australia–India economic ties.

“By working closely with the City of Greater Geelong, we aim to create tangible outcomes for businesses, especially SMEs, and foster a vibrant corridor of innovation, investment, and collaboration,” Mr Gupta said.

“This landmark MOU reflects our shared vision to strengthen trade and investment ties between Geelong and India. By bringing together businesses, innovators, and investors, we are unlocking pathways for sustainable growth and deeper collaboration across both regions.”
