Community drive towards better roads

Surf Coast residents can have their say on how their roads are maintained with the draft Road Management Plan open for feedback.

The draft 2025-2029 was endorsed for public exhibition during council’s meeting on June 24 to outline its road maintenance obligations and define the responsibilities of road users.

Councillor Tony Phelps said road management was one of council’s “most important responsibilities” and biggest budget allocations.

“I would really love to hear what our community think about this draft road management plan and its various aspects,” he said.

“The roads team do a fabulous job keeping up with road maintenance under difficult technical and variable weather-related circumstances.

“Surf Coast Shire may have some poor roads every once in a while… but I have been looking at the quality of roads in other areas outside the shire and we enjoy a pretty good standard of roads.”

Cr Phelps said the road management plan outlined the standards council was expected to maintain and was updated every four years to ensure it reflected current needs and expectations.

“I’d like to see some more realistic standards. As an example; 300 metres of 35-millimetre corrugations is acceptable for three months before council is required to act,” he said.

“That seems a little generous to me and would certainly be very uncomfortable to anyone having to drive such a piece of road.”

Visit surfcoast.vic.gov.au/RoadManagementPlanFeedback before July 25 to provide feedback on the draft 2025-2029 Road Management Plan.
