As part of National Volunteer Week, Barwon Coast hosted a celebration on May 20, to recognise the outstanding contributions of local volunteers.
The annual event brought together representatives from nine local volunteer groups who contribute to the health, safety and enjoyment of the Barwon Coast – including Coastcare groups, EstuaryWatch, Friends of the Bluff, Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine, Friends of the Lobster Pot, the Foreshore Master Plan Community Reference Group, and local Surf Life Saving Clubs.
Held at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, guests were welcomed with drinks and canapés, before hearing from Sandy Gatehouse, chair of the Barwon Coast Committee of Management, who thanked volunteers for their passion and commitment.
“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our coastal community,” she said.
“From conservation and education to safety and stewardship, your work ensures that the coast is cared for today and protected for future generations. National Volunteer Week is a chance to say thank you, and to celebrate the deep connections you create between people and place.”
This snapshot of the year’s achievements showcased the incredible diversity of work being done, from dune planting and community education to bird monitoring and coastal safety.

on the night and those whose quiet work continues throughout the year.
