Brett Cunningham has resigned from his role as Golden Plains Shire councillor to look after his health and spend time with family.
Mr Cunningham was first elected to council in 2020 and served as mayor for two terms during 2023 and 2024, but announced his resignation on Tuesday, May 6.
Mr Cunningham said it had been a privilege and honour to serve on Golden Plains Shire Council while advocating for the community.
“I believe that at this point of time I need to prioritise the health and wellbeing of myself and my family,” he said.
“I wish my fellow councillors all the best for the future and in their roles of being elected representatives and advocates of the residents and communities of the Golden Plains Shire.
“Going forward, I will remain an active committee member of local community groups, allowing me to continue to volunteer and contribute my time and commitment to the community.”
Interim chief executive Steve Sagona said he thanked Mr Cunningham’s four-and-a-half years of support.
He said council would advise on filling the vacancy left by the resignation following consultation with the Victorian Electoral Commission.
“We extend our best wishes to Brett and his family in their future endeavours,” Mr Sagona said.
