It is finals time for Tennis Geelong’s night competitions with Thursday Triples being played over two weeks and Monday night women’s in between.
Triples Section 1 kicked off the finals on Thursday with Moolap’s Two Phone Chol looking for their eighth title, with Geelong Lawn standing in their way.
The match started with Callum Davey giving Moolap the lead with a 6-0 win in the first singles while Lawn took the second when Rasmus Haaima and Jake Peck got up 6-4.
Moolap took the lead with Connor Chivell winning the second singles 6-3, and consolidated with Davey pairing with Lachy Edgar in the second doubles winning through narrowly in a tie-break.
With a 3-1 lead, Moolap were poised for another premiership title, but needed to keep cool heads to stay in front. Haaima kept Lawn in the match winning the third singles 6-3, but seasoned partners Chivell and Sophie De Wit sealed the match for Moolap with a 6-3 win in the final doubles. The final result was four sets to two.
Monday saw two finals for Women’s doubles with Grape Therapy against Rust-eze in Section 1 and Lara hosting Highton in Section 2.
Section 1 was one of the closest seasons on record, with only two points separating the top three teams with last summer’s premiers Smash Hits narrowly missing out.
Alison Lugg and Emma Nixon battled in the first set against Andrea Eccleston and Mel McClelland with marathon rallies and lengthy games, but the consistency of Eccleston and McClelland was too great with Rust-eze taking the first set 8-4.
Denise Airey and Evie Ryan took an early 4-1 lead against Di Williams and Donna Schoenmaekers in the second set before the Therapy pair fought back to get back to level at five-all.
Airey and Ryan broke to go up 6-5 before Airey, after several deuces, held serve to win the set for Rust-eze 8-5. The reverse doubles went the same way with Lugg and Schoenmaekers matching Eccleston and Ryan game for game
to five-all, before Rust-eze broke and continued on to win 6-5.
McClelland and Airey had Nixon and Williams on the run in the final set clinching the win 8-4 and the premiership four sets to love.
Lara went into the Section 2 final firm favourites, having not dropped a match for the season, however, anything is possible on a given night.
Kristy Woodcock and Briane Doolan toughed it out in the first set with Breanna Hulands and Jessie Sununta with the Lara pairing winning 8-5 while Wendy Caddy and Ashleigh Hughes were victorious 8-3.
Lara continued their winning form with Woodcock and Caddy taking the third set 8-0 before Hulands and Hughes rounded out the win 8-3.
Finals will conclude for the summer season on Thursday with Triples Sections 2 to 6, with registrations now open for the winter season starting in four weeks.
