Grovedale 9-year-old Isaac Lenehan longs for a day when he no longer has to put needles in his belly.

Isaac, who has type 1 diabetes, has raised more than $400 for this Sunday’s JDRF One Walk at Rippleside, with help from friends and family.

“They want diabetes to be nothing too,” he told the Indy yesterday.

“It would be good because I wouldn’t have to go home when I have very high (blood sugar).

“I wouldn’t have to stay home or do any tests, put any needles in my belly and bum. We don’t have to waste any money on lollies.”

Isaac had taken over fundraising from proud mother Amanda, who had walked, held sales and even skydived for diabetes research over several years.

Recently, she helped Isaac post on social media about his diabetes-related incidents or share helpful information, which often resulted in extra donations.

“He’s actually quite enjoyed doing it,” she said.

Isaac’s younger sister Sarah and his group of friends at school had been “amazing” when he needed help, Amanda said.

But he was already quite self-sufficient in treating himself and essential tasks like counting carbs, she said.
