Four-metre, moving metal sculptures installed off-shore in Corio Bay with a nautical theme and lighting are among suggestions to get creative juices flowing for a competition to design a Geelong “icon”.
Members of the Icon for Geelong judging panel suggested the sculptures as an example of the ideas organisers were hoping to attract for the competition.
Organiser Andrew Senia said he and the other judges were already fielding entry ideas.
Premier and former architect Ted Baillieu, who has been invited to be a guest judge, has thrown his support behind the Icon for Geelong.
The City has authorised chief executive officer Steven Griffin to investigate participation in the competition.
Deputy Mayor Cameron Granger has revealed council would consider contributing $20,000 for total prize pool so far of $30,000.
Mr Senia said the concept could gain private and corporate backing as well as government support.
“I can see that an impressive icon would attract naming rights sponsors,” Mr Senia said.
Other judges on the panel are Mayor John Mitchell, Geelong Otway Tourism boss Roger Grant, Deakin University’s Professor Hisham Elkadi, city chamber of commerce executive officer Bernadette Uzelac and Geelong Art Gallery head Geoffrey Edwards.
