Staff suffer as firms ‘abandoned’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

A WORKER was left without entitlements worth $35,000 when a Geelong training company was “abandoned” this year.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) revealed that Focus on Training was one of 10 abandoned companies being wound up in Geelong.
The companies owe a combined $429,000 to 15 employees.
Liquidators had been appointed to help the former employees access a Fair Entitlements Guarantee scheme (FEG), ASIC said.
“The appointment of liquidators also facilitates a full and proper investigation into the reasons why the companies failed and allows recovery of any voidable or unreasonable director-related transactions.”
The FEG is a legislative safety net scheme with Australian Government funding to assist employees owed unpaid entitlements because of their employer’s liquidation or a company directors’ bankruptcy.
ASIC company records showed that Focus on Training was based in Little Malop Street, with Jennifer Syme listed as director and Christopher Sercombe as manager.
Shane Cremin of Rodgers Reidy was appointed its liquidator.
