FASHIONS on the Field was awash with bold statement colours as the ladies grappled with wind and searing heat at Wednesday’s Geelong Cup.
Thousands of punters and fashionistas packed Geelong Racecourse for a glimpse of spring racing statements as a record 150 entrants strutted their stuff.
Royal blues, reds and purples were all the rage among the ladies, while pale greens and blues were predominant for the gentlemen.
But on the main stage it was all about one lady in red.
Grovedale’s Melaine Morgan, 26, shone in red and black, taking out Fashions on the Field’s dress and headdress awards.
Wearing a frock by American designer XOXO and a headdress from Brisbane milliner Terrioswald, Ms Morgan said the outfit had been six months in the making.
“This season is all to do with bright colours and red for me is an absolute standout colour, so I decided to get the outfit started some time ago,” she said.
“I got up at 6am to get ready to make sure I could get to the track nice and early and not miss out on anything
“The cup is a premier fashion event for Geelong.”
The panel of judges critiqued Fashions on the Field entrants on grooming, “suitability” and attention to detail.
Ms Morgan wanted to “bring stylish back” to Geelong racing.
“I thought a bit of 1940s class was needed this year,” she said.
“It’s been lacking here for a few years. It’s making a comeback now.”
