Creek decision ‘backs 4C shift’

KIM WATERS
STATE Government’s backflip on developing Torquay’s Spring Creek could help residents fight plans to run a bypass link past their homes, according to their spokesperson.
South Grovedale Action Group’s Magarita Kumnik said residents were anxiously awaiting Planning Minister Matthew Guy’s decision on the 4C link two months after advisory panel hearings.
Ms Kumnik said Mr Guy’s decision on Spring Creek would focus Torquay’s growth north toward Grovedale, supporting calls to put the 4C link between the bypass and Surf Coast Highway further south toward Torquay.
“I suspect this new announcement might affect Mr Guy’s decision. Surf Coast Shire always wanted the road further south than it was planned and if there is more growth in Torquay there is even more of a reason to move the road.”
Ms Kumnik said residents were questioning why the decision was taking so long when Mr Guy promised in January that it would take “a low number of months”.
“It’s a waiting game to see what’s going to happen next.”
A State Government spokes-person told the Independent in June a decision was expected “in a few weeks”.
But the spokesperson told the Independent this week that “no further updates” were available.
